January 2020 Faculty-Led Travel Courses

In January 2020, Salem will offer three faculty-led travel courses

  • From the Paris to the Loire Valley: A Sampling of French Culture
  • Music in 18th and 19th Century Germany
  • Connect! The Land of Enchantment [New Mexico]

Each of these courses is described below, along with a link to apply to the program.

The program fees are comprehensive and include all required expenses, such as: international flights, accommodations, local transportation, 2 meals per day, and fees for all required activities. Not included are passport and visa fees, immunizations, and spending money for additional food, souvenirs, or activities during free time.

All applicants are automatically considered for study abroad scholarships that award up to $600 per student.

From Paris to the Loire Valley: A Sampling of French Culture (JANX 300) 

Professors Fernando Pardo & Nora Doyle

This course will focus on the history and culture of France, with an emphasis on on the regions of Paris and the Loire Valley. While in Paris students will visit historical monuments, museums, and nearby sights such as Versailles as well as visiting historic neighborhoods such as the Latin Quarter and Le Marais. In the Loire Valley, students will explore medieval and renaissance architecture by visiting chateaux and cathedrals and experiencing French wine culture. Enrollment Deposit: $1995 due Sept. 30, 2019

Music in 18th and 19th Century Germany (JANX300)

Professor Amy Zigler

This course will focus on the classical music legacy found in the German cities of Bonn and Leipzig. In Bonn there will be tours of Beethoven's Concert Hall, the Beethoven Museum as well as other historical sites. In Leipzig, students will follow the famous Music Trail and visit the Bach Museum, the Church of St. Thomas where Bach was organist, the Mendelssohn House, the Schuman House, and the Wagner exhibition. Connect! The Land of Enchantment [New Mexico] (JANX300) 

Professors Susan Harding & Shawn Ricks

This course will focus on appreciating the diverse natural and cultural landscape of New Mexico in a way that allows students to develop a deeper connection to themselves, each other and the greater community. Experiences will include volunteer opportunities (correlated with Salem's Day of Service), hikes, picnics, visits to Santa Fe, Zuni Pueblo, Santa Ana Pueblo, Red Rock State Park, and White Sands National Monument.
