Faculty-Led Programs
Each year, Salem offers January Term travel courses led by Salem faculty and awarding Salem course credit - some pass/fail "experimental" courses, and some graded courses listed in the academic catalog. The destinations and topics change each year, based on faculty and student interest.
The January 2020 faculty-led programs will visit France, Germany, and New Mexico.
Previous faculty-led programs include:
- From Paris to Normandy: A Sampling of French History (January 2018)
- Explore Gardens and Trails of High Sierra of Ecuador (January 2017)
- Connect: The Spirit of Aloha in Kaua'i, Hawai'i (January 2017)
Courses offered each January Term are announced the previous Spring semester.
AIFS Study Abroad and CIS Study Abroad
Sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to join one of AIFS and CIS study abroad January Term study abroad programs. Courses and destinations vary by year; January 2018 included courses granted 3 semester hours for up to 3 weeks of travel in France, Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.
Independent Studies & Internships
Sophomores, juniors and seniors may also arrange independent studies or internships over the summer at international destinations. To do this, you will need to coordinate with both the Coordinator of Study Abroad to approve your international travel, and your faculty sponsor who will help you design your academic work and provide your grade. You will be responsible for arranging any necessary travel (including a work visa) and housing.
